The Kubler-Ross model, is better known as, “The Five Stages of Grief”.  In 1969, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross wrote a book called On Death and Dying, which was inspired by her work with terminally ill patients.  Her five stages of grief have become widely accepted.

The five stages include:

Denial – “No, Not me, it cannot be true”

 Anger- “Why me?”

 Bargaining- “What if I …?”

Depression- “What is there to live for?”

Acceptance- “It’s okay to live again”

There is no defined sequence of these stages when a person is faced with a terminal illness or being the caregiver of a love one that is dying.  Not everyone experiences these stages in this order and some don’t experience each and every one of the stages.  It is important to remember that YOUR grief is unique to YOU.
